Activity 1:What did the people of Farewell Spit do to help the whales?
They tried their very best to help them by running to the ocean and back to pour water on the whales. They tried to keep the whales wet but many of the whales did not survive.
Overall even though not many survived it still turned out to be that some of them were lucky to have survived.
Activity 2: Whale rider.
In the tradition, it was only boys that were allowed to become chief. They were expecting to have a baby that would then carry on as chief but he unfortunately died at birth. However his twin sister survived. While she was growing up she wanted to learn all of things required to be a chief but there was one thing standing in her way. Unfortunately based on her grandfather's beliefs, he only saw males as chiefs
Activity 3: I believe we should stop fishing at Farewell Spit because…
The hector dolphins numbers are decreasing (There are only around 7,000 living)
Undersized fish are being illegally caught in the close abouts
Farewell spit is a Maori place that means a bunch to the people of it. It is not only wrong fishing there, it is disgusting and should be respected like anywhere else in the world.
