Maths:
For maths I went up and down like so many steep hills. In term two and three I had stepped up the pace. I feel like I have been going up and down because I don't  have enough understanding in certain areas. Since Maths is my absolute weakness I will need to learn more of algebra. By the end of this year I would like to achieve a 4A like my friend.

Reading:
For reading I went up each stage. I think that I have gone up because I have a stronger understanding in the areas provided and I focus on paying attention to my teacher. I am happy with my scores and hope to get a 5 by the end of the year. To do this i will pay more attention to my teacher and complete the activities given to improve my understanding of the text. One aspect that I want to learn about is Irony.

Writing:
For Writing I am not eager writing about this.  Last term and the term before I was happy for achieving fours but this term flipped. I suddenly got a 3P. I think this was caused by the poor ideas I used. I also don't think I have accelerated because I don't edit my work fully. By the end of this year I want to achieve a 4A. To upgrade my writing I really need to focus more on writing a variety of sentences and I need to stick to the topic as my teacher says I ended up on the main road.

My Opinion:
To be honest I have a big problem in my learning. My idea is to make my parents proud but i haven’t shown it yet. I really need to work harder to be successful in life.

Writing - Should Grandparents get paid to look after Grandchildren?

Should Grandparents get paid to look after Grandchildren?

Is it necessary to pay your parents to look after your own children?  First of all people may think it is a good way to make money instead of having to go for job interviews e.t.c. Personally I think Grandparents should look after their Grandchildren out of generosity, not for a few extra bucks. To me it almost sounds like they could be doing it for the sake of getting money like, if I could simplify it I would say that they are just using the children for money.

On the other hand why would you even think of paying your parents to look after your children? I think Grandparents mainly should not get paid to look after their Grandchildren because they are family. If parents are unable to look after their children then that would be different. For example if your parents were sick or had a strong connection to bad influences then it would be a different because they would have no other person or people to care for them. However, if your parents are more than capable to look after you then there is no reason for them to be paid.

From a Grandparent’s point of view love may not be enough to support their financial issues. It would obviously mean that they somewhat need financial help. Even though they would need financial help, babysitting their Grandchildren should not be an option. Instead they can try finding a part time job. If your parents are willing to pay your Grandparents then I can not do anything because that is their choice but from my point of view I don't think I would pay my parents to look after my children.

Learning about Puns

Yesterday my class studied puns. Puns are a play of words or to make it simple it is a joke that has made up words. My pun was “ What do you call an Alligator in a vest? An Investigator. My teacher also literally brought a pun to life. “Brainwashing”.

I have stepped up the pace!

Today I sat a stage 7 timed test for basic facts. The percentage I achieved was 90%. I am glad that I achieved 90% because last time I sat this stage I got less than 70%. I feel that I have stepped up the pace and that I could be capable of doing stage 8 if I pay attention to my teacher.

My Storyboard: My Simple Machine

My storyboard is about how I felt about making my simple machine. This was easy to make and I hope to make another comic strip but with a different topic.

The Matific Games Have Started!

Today the matific games started. For the scores I have 53 stars but I have reached today's 1000 points. The game that I thoroughly enjoyed the best was the Cut, Paste and Figure. It was very enjoyable and so were the other games like the measuring game and the units one. Our school in the New Zealand category is coming third place which is very good. We hope to reach first place.

                           My Reflection: Sewing with Mrs.Tuipulotu

Two weeks ago I accomplished (with Mrs.Tuipulotu’s help) this pretty Tote Bag. It is made from fabric and thread. As you can see I did not use my bare hands with a needle and thread to complete this. I instead used a sewing machine which is now broken because of my classes clumsiness. Overall I enjoyed making parts of this tote bag and thank you Mrs.Tuipulotu for helping me finish it off!

The Simple Machine Challenge

A few days ago Rooms 7&8 were with Mr.Hendricks to observe a little challenge. His challenge was to lift someone up with his thumb. He came out with a weight and a block of wood. We carefully watched as he turned both objects into a seesaw. Later on Joshua stepped on it then Mr.Hendricks pushed the wood down with his thumb. What was really doing the magic was the fulcrum. The fulcrum gives the wood ease to come down. That day we learnt that simple machines can do a ton of work.

Balloon Volleyball

Last week room 8 went to the hall to play Balloon Volleyball. I learnt that the skills required for actual Volleyball aren't really needed for the Balloon version. When I used a balloon it was much easier but I still had to control the ball properly.I enjoyed doing this activity in the hall and I had fun doing it with my friends.

Creating my Simple Machine

15 Aug 2017 13:58:27.jpg

Over the weekend I was busy making my simple machine. Room 8 could either pick to make a toy from a Pulley or a Wheel and Axle. I chose to use a Wheel and Axle. My simple machine is supposed to be a car but it does not roll. It contains bottle caps, jar caps, straws and a pencil. The actual car shape was formed with cardboard. A picture from google images inspired me to make this car. The reason why I made this toy was because it connects to our topic study which is simple machines. This was not too hard to create and it was actually quite fun. Overall I think making this toy has expanded my learning for our topic study especially in Wheel and Axles.

Explanation Writing (Why we need fire drills)

Why do we need a fire drill?

Before we get to the point of why we need a fire drill, do you know what a fire drill is? Firstly, fire drills are practices of how you can survive a fire. For example what if you unintentionally left your room candle lit which caused a fire? That would mean you would have to solve a way to get out of the house. To make life a bit easier this is why we need fire drills.

How can a fire drill save your life? There have been many cases on the news where people die because of house fires. Maybe the people didn’t know how to exit a house because they never experienced a fire drill. This is why you need to experience one. You may think that all you need to do is jump out of a window. Even though that is an option, for other people it might not be the safest thing to do. What if your window supposedly was two stories high?  You didn’t think about that did you. Practice videos on the internet are posted for a purpose. That purpose is obviously to save your life.

Practicing at school. Fires don't only suddenly happen at home, they can happen in your own home. You will need to experience one so why not practice at school? Schools are bigger which means it could possibly be harder to work your way out. If you practice at school it will make life easier if it happens in your own home because homes are smaller than schools
but that means the house will set on fire faster. Because it will set on fire instantly you will need to move faster in your fire drill. Your life may depend on it.

Fire drills can not only save your life, it can save others. Fires may happen in the blink an eye
so you need to think fast. Panicking does not solve anything so try not to panic too much. From all of these reasons why you need to experience a fire drill are you convinced that we all need it? If so that is great because it can save anyone's life anytime and anywhere.

Meeting my goals through my reading

Activity 1.
Screenshot 2017-08-08 at 11.08.52.png
Activity 2.
Harmful chemicals that are used to kill weeds could accidentally get into your system which could either kill you or cause you to need urgent care.

Killing pests like possums could easily be killed safely without those boxes that attract them. Toddlers could think that they are playhouses but little do they know, it can kill them.

Bits of poison that are put in the garden to kill snails could be chewed by a baby. We all know that if this happens, it will end up faulty.
Today I have chosen these two activities to post on my blog. The reason I picked these two activities was it connected to my goals for this year. One of my goals is finding information and writing about it. Doing this can help me improve in writing. My first activity is an advertisement about why people should buy white fly traps. The other activity on the right is about the consequences of using harmful products to kill weeds or pests. I am trying hard to accelerate at my reading.

Ete Ariki

IMG_4211.JPG

Every Tuesday we are with Ms.Maude to learn Maori himene or Artworks.Today we learnt one called
‘Ete Ariki’. In this song the girls had to do a high note and the boys had to do a normal to deep note. The english translation to this song is mostly about the lord and how we believe in it. I enjoyed singing with my friends and Ms.Maude and I am looking forward to be learning the Karakia which means Prayer.

Helping Mr.Hendricks

This morning there were some boys that helped Mr.Hendricks carry the heavy logs to the senior side ditch. The reason why they moved the logs to the other side was because Mr.Hendricks wants to mark a Volleyball court so we can practice for sports camp. Right now practice on the field because it is currently waterlogged.

Pizza Lunch - Friday

Screenshot 2017-08-04 at 13.52.41.png

Thanks to Mrs.Collins today my class and I had a very pleasant lunch. The reason why we got to eat pizza for lunch was because 3 out of the 4 children completed the Winter learning journey. This journey contained 21 activities which was finished by my 2 friends and I. Thank you Mrs.Collins for taking your time to buy our class pizza!

Maths T3W2 - Comparing Fractions

This week we used inequality signs <, > and = to compare fractions.
On Monday we used materials. This was easy for me because all I did was put one fraction on top of the other and it instantly found the answer to which one was bigger.

On Tuesday we used a fraction chart. This was easy for me because I could compare it with my fingers to find which one was bigger and which one was smaller.

On Wednesday we worked without the above.  We learnt a strategy which was multiplying each numerator with the denominators. The  knowledge required to solve to problems this way is to know your times tables or else you will have trouble doing this.
This was easy for me because I already know my times tables so it makes my life a little easier.

Wednesday Football

WALHT: Write a post for my blog on football skills.
Screenshot 2017-08-02 at 12.33.37.png
Today we practiced the skills of football with our coach Steve. He demonstrated these skills:

1. Inner foot kick

2. Outer foot kick

3. Stop ball with sole

4. Kick ball with lace

5. Free kick

6. Dribble

Out of all these skills I can say that I only felt dribbling difficult but I managed to get the rest of them correct. Playing football for the first time helped me learn some skills for when we
actually practice for sports camp.

The fun aspects of playing football today was how we got to play two games per team. It was challenging but fun at the same time. Another one was how we had to kick as many people’s balls as we could.

If I could compare one sport to football it would probably be netball because it is the only sport that I know really well and it also contains running around the court e.t.c.

Even though we didn’t practice all of the skills we still practiced to move the ball which was the main thing. If I had to rate myself out of 5 for practicing footbalI I would probably say a 3.5. I really enjoyed playing in the first session of football and I can’t wait to play it again next week.
