Second place is good enough!

For the past few days our class has been working hard to reach the top three postitions for the South Auckland Maths Contest. All I can remember is that we were in 9th place. Room 10 was beating us so we had to work extra hard. Thanks to their trip to Rangitoto we had the opportunity to beat Room 10 by a mile. We indeed took it. Even though we did not manage to claim first place, we are still glad that we even placed in the top three. As you can see, we placed second which was a huge success. I enjoyed competing in the competition and I would love to participate in another one.

💥A Colour fiesta! 💥

Today I completed my art. We started the art yesterday with our reliever Mr.Simmons To do this art I used:

  • Pastels.
The method to completing this art is:

  1. Draw your plant and its soil (With Pastel not Pencil)
  2. Add colours one at a time
  3. Blend with your thumb ( For the affect)
Even though my art did not turn out the best but I am still happy with the outcome. My art is supposed to be a plant but it looks far from it. Huge thanks to Mr.Simmons for helping us with this art and we hope to have you again in the near future.  Although some of the disadvantages were about the messiness, one of the major advantages was getting to see all the colours blend in together like a dream. If you are going to try this art we recommend you putting a newspaper underneath so that the mess does not end up on the table. Pastle is not too hard to rub off from tables but it is better not to be a messy artist!

⛅ I believe I can flyyy! ⛅

Yesterday I sat the E-asttle strands test. As seen, I proudly ACCELERATED. I moved from a 4B to a 5B. I am very happy that I achieved this score because it goes to show that I kept everything that I learned through this year in the front of my brain. I am really impressed with my score and I hope I can keep it that way. Next year I am aiming for a 5A. To do so, I must pay full attention to my teacher. That way I might just be able to achieve a 5A.

Descriptive Writing - Fireworks

I must use
  1. my 5 senses.
  2. adjectives
  3. precise verbs
  4. figurative language- personification, metaphors, simile, hyperbole, alliteration

Whoosh! My eyes lit up like a five year old. Colours flying through the air, so beautiful. A deafening sound came from the air. I nearly jumped out of my skin. Flaming balls shooting through the sky was the best ending to my day. Shiny stars scattered across the beautiful night sky. I accidently inhaled the disgusting smoke. Why did I feel as if I was smoking? Thrill rushed through me like a child running to a playground. Excitement only went higher each time one was lit. When each one was lit, gunpowder hit my eyes. My eyes were getting teary like an infant. Faces of distraught filled my presence. I couldn’t blame them since we were at least thirty steps away. My face had no room for worry or scare, because a bright smile had already claimed its spot.

Alicia's Speech

Simple Machines. When you think of Simple Machines you think of Wheels and axles, Pulleys e.t.c. We find that most of the attention is brought mainly on the outside features. We hardly ever tend to at least wonder how it works and how it makes our lives easier.Malo lelei, Talofa Lava and greetings to you all. Today I will be talking about the Wheel and Axle.

Firstly, Wheels and Axles are not only one of the most Simple Machines created, but it is also one of the most easy to make, machines. The magical creator of this machine is Robert Wonders. In 3500 B.C, in Mesopotamia his reason to making this was because decades before its invention, humans were very limited into how many things they could take when they would travel over the land. With the Wheel and Axles help, they were now able to bring unlimited belongings with them even if their destination was less than ten minutes away.

Soon after the Wheel and Axle was invented, people started making wagon wheels in Central Asia. Even after the Axle was invented, it made our daily lives even more convenient! Pottery wheels were the first wheels invented in Sumeria around the 4000 B.C.

The Wheel and Axle was often associated with early humans rather named, ‘cavemen’.
If they were in the need of carrying big slabs of rock to build a fort, or blocks of wood to make a fire, they would need some sort of help taking them home, right? We all know that it would be a struggle taking everything home without some sort of gadget. Luckily, with the help of Wheels and Axles, they’d have no struggle at all bringing them home. The oldest wooden Wheel and Axle found was in 2002 at Ljubljana Marshes, the capital of Slovenia.

Now that I have explained a part of Simple Machines, I hope this has expanded your learning in the Wheel and Axle. Wheels and Axles are very important things to learn during your time at school and so are others. Thank you for listening to my speech and I hope you have enjoyed listening to it as much as I enjoyed reading it.

Chemical Change - Breakfast Cups

Screenshot 2017-11-07 at 2.23.32 PM.pngScreenshot 2017-11-07 at 2.24.16 PM.png

Today we did a baking experiment to see Chemical Change. We baked breakfast cups which contained..
  • Eggs
  • Baked Beans
  • Bread
  • Margarine
  • Spring Onion
After we baked them we immediately noticed that there was…
  • Release of gas
  • Colour Change
  • Change of temperature
A chemical change is a new substance that is irreversible. We noticed that there was a colour change in the Eggs and Bread. Although it was only for science, it was delicious!

Elephant Toothpaste Experiment

Screenshot 2017-11-02 at 12.45.52 PM.png

Today we spent the middle block completing an experiment. My reading group and I made Elephant Toothpaste to experience observing the Chemical Changes. Chemical Changes are results of new substances in which may be irreversible. While we were in our groups, once we we observed..
  • Colour Change
  • Bubbles Form

While observing the Chemical changes, I noticed that a while after the substance was left alone, the formula changed into a rather unpleasant mixture. From doing this experiment it helped me learn more about Chemical Changes. I hope that in the near future we get to complete more experiments.
